Fecal Occult Blood Test
Blood in Stool (Bright Red) - Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment and Remedies
A stool test is used to detect the presence of blood or other gastrointestinal abnormalities, such as colon or gastric cancer, inflammatory bowel disease , hemorrhoids , anal fissures or infections. There are two main types of stool tests to choose from. The first, a fecal occult blood test FOBT , detects the presence of blood in your feces. The second, a stool DNA test, detects the presence of genetic material from polyps and cancerous tumors. FOBTs use a chemical reaction to check for the presence of blood in your stool.
Blood in Urine & Stool
The fecal occult blood test FOBT is a lab test used to check stool samples for hidden occult blood. Occult blood in the stool may indicate colon cancer or polyps in the colon or rectum — though not all cancers or polyps bleed. Typically, occult blood is passed in such small amounts that it can be detected only through the chemicals used in a fecal occult blood test. If blood is detected through a fecal occult blood test, additional tests may be needed to determine the source of the bleeding.
