Media reacts to the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict (video, photos):
Rosie DiManno: We all thought there would be a verdict in this case on Saturday. We were stunned Saturday night when Judge Eakin handed down the verdict that said the jury cannot be unanimous. Something they failed to do on three separate occasions. Now, having said that, obviously he’s the judge. He can give that order because he has the absolute power to do that. But one other thing we think is deeply troubling for us: the culture of these people, the behavior that we saw on the stand, could not be considered by Judge Eakin to be a fair or impartial vote for anyone.
I think the clear indication that he has that in the jury was instructive in itself because these were jurors who were clearly very familiar with the family and Kyle Rittenhouse, who were journalists. We thought they were fair, they were impartial, they were professionals, yet this is how they acted. These are clear, this was clearly a holdover of the culture that we’ve been dealing with. This was not their fault, it was the culture, and it really goes to the point where how are we going to grow that culture in this city?
Kent Chang: I think a lot of other people would feel the same way. I think it was really shocking. I think that it seemed like a case of either a hung jury or not a second trial, and I think people are not accepting of the verdict.
