Woman arrested on fraud charges after posing as Kenyan men

Fraud was allegedly orchestrated by same woman posing as foreign man who travelled to Canada to meet her

A woman pretending to be a man who travelled from Kenya to Toronto to marry her has been arrested on Tuesday by the Canadian police who dubbed the scam a “ransomware scam”.

Mirella Caire, 33, of Toronto, Canadian media said, will appear before a judge on Wednesday on fraud charges.

She was arrested at a hotel in Toronto early Tuesday morning. The Canadian police said she believed she had been scammed out of $1.5m (£1.09m).

Six international charges have been laid against Caire, who posed as a Kenyan who was happy to marry a woman he called Gia.

By pretending to be a man in Africa, “Liza”, she would collect payments from phone users claiming they had been hacked by malware or in order to avert the abuse of children.

The fraud began in 2009 and culminated with thousands of victims making hundreds of thousands of phone calls worldwide, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said. The police said some victims were fooled by the ladies delivering financial statements without revealing their true nature.
